Auto transmissions have come a long way since their early days. Modern automatic transmissions can be found in the vast majority of new vehicles on the road today. And while there are still some manual die-hards out there, automatics are becoming increasingly popular for their convenience and ease of use.

While most drivers know the meaning of letters and numbers on the gear shift, some people could use a refresher course.

That's where this blog post comes in! Letters and numbers can be a tricky topic for many drivers. Mercedes-Benz of South Orlando, serving Oviedo, FL, will go over everything about gear shifts - from their meaning to how they're used in changing speeds with your pedals!

So whether you're a seasoned driver or just learning the ropes, read on for all the necessary information!

Letter R: Reverse:

The Letter "R" stands for reverse. To put your car in reverse, push the gearshift down to the bottom of the shifter and then release. Your car should start to move backward.

Letter N: Neutral:

The Letter "N" stands for neutral. Neutral is the middle position of the gearshift and is used when you're stopped or want to coast without using the gas pedal.

Letter P: Park:

The Letter "P" denotes park. Parking your car is simple - push the gearshift into the park position and set your parking brake.

Letter L: Low:

The Letter "L" stands for low. Low gear is used when driving at a slower speed or going downhill.

Letter S: Sport:

The Letter "S" stands for sport. Sport mode is typically used when driving on the highway or wanting a little more power.

Letter D: Drive:

The Letter "D" stands for drive. To put your car in drive, push the gearshift down from neutral until it clicks into place. Your vehicle will now be able to move forwards.

Gear Shift Symbol + and -: Upshift and Downshift gears:

The gear shift symbols "+" and "-" stand for upshift and downshift. To upshift, you press the car's accelerator pedal to increase speed and move the gear shift lever up to the next higher gear. To downshift, you press the car's brake pedal to slow down and then move the gear shift lever down to the next lower gear.

We put together this guide to Letters and numbers. So you can easily navigate your way around your new Mercedes-Benz and feel confident when shifting gears.
